What is the difference between quartz watches and automatic watches?

The biggest difference is and remains that Quartz watches are battery-powered watches, while automatic watches are powered by kinetic energy. In addition, a big difference is that the second hand runs quietly and "floatingly" around the clockwork, which is in contrast to the second hand in Quartz watches, which ticks around. You will therefore also be able to hear the difference.

A battery-powered watch must not be wound continuously if it is not in use. It must be an automatic movement that typically has a "power reserve" of 40 hours, where it can lie still and still keep time. If you exceed the power reserve, the watch will automatically stop, after which you must manually wind it up again.

How to maintain automatic watches?

When you have an automatic watch, this means that the watch winds itself. It does this using kinetic energy that occurs in contact with your wrist. If you don't use it every day, you have to pull it up if you want to be sure that it goes fairly accurately. You do this by turning the crown clockwise 10-15 times.

If you can see the date in the movement and it does not fit, it is important that you do it correctly so as not to damage the movement. You should therefore preferably not change the date and day of the week between 22:00 and 03:00, just as you should not turn the crown anti-clockwise either.

Like all other watches, it is important that you get it past a watchmaker and have it serviced every two years. This ensures that the watch maintains its performance and that it does not wear out too quickly. A watch can last for many years and many generations if it is well looked after - so you better pay extra attention.

Otherwise, the typical maintenance advice applies: Take it off when you clean, are active or take a shower. Store it in a clean box and clean it regularly of dirt and grime.
